ABSTRACT: This action research study aimed to examine the effects of Visual Imagery-Based Materials(VIBM) on the oral production of tenth-grade learners at a public school in Colombia. After identifying scarce oral production opportunities, rote learning assessment, and subsequent students’ inability to engage into oral production in English, an action research study was conducted using VIBM to activate meaningful oral production opportunities by evoking students’ emotions and experiences, elaborating hand-made materials, and introducing progressive triggering. Qualitative data were collected through journal entries, semi-structured interviews, focus groups, students’ artifacts, and audio recordings of oral productions. As a result, students increased their willingness and confidence to speak in English, as reflected in their ability to produce short oral texts coherent with class topics, engage in language-based discussions, and self-monitor speech. Moreover, theme-based pictures, card decks, mediation cards, and pieces of art crafted by them allowed for producing oral descriptions, interpretations, and self-expressions. The use of VIBM is recommended as an opportunity for other teachers to start exploring EFL knowledge activation, use visual mediation, and grow students’ positive emotions and experiences to trigger oral production. |

Después de identificar las escasas oportunidades de producción oral, evaluación mediante aprendizaje memorístico y la consiguiente incapacidad de los estudiantes para participar en la producción oral en inglés, se llevó a cabo un estudio de investigación-acción utilizando VIBM para activar oportunidades significativas de producción oral mediante la evocación de las emociones y experiencias de los estudiantes, la elaboración de materiales hechos a mano y la introducción de la activación progresiva. Se recopilaron datos cualitativos mediante diarios, entrevistas semiestructuradas, grupos focales, artefactos de los estudiantes y grabaciones de audio de producciones orales. Como resultado, los alumnos aumentaron su disposición y confianza para hablar en inglés, lo que se reflejó en su capacidad para producir textos orales breves coherentes con los temas de clase, participar en discusiones basadas en lenguaje y supervisar el habla. Además, las imágenes temáticas, barajas de cartas, tarjetas de mediación y obras de arte elaboradas por ellos mismos les permitieron producir descripciones orales, interpretaciones y autoexpresiones.
