El desarrollo sostenible ha sido incluido en las agendas de la industria, y varias iniciativas nacionales e internacionales han desarrollado marcos para la sostenibilidad. La gestión ambiental incluye una amplia variedad de prácticas, tanto obligatorias como voluntarias (es decir, sistemas de gestión ambiental y evaluación del ciclo de vida). La adopción de prácticas ambientalmente responsables, puede ayudar a las empresas a minimizar sus impactos negativos sobre el medio ambiente y también a mejorar su rendición de cuentas en temas ambientales.Since the early 1990s, companies have shown a growing interest in social and environmental issues and have been looking for ways to integrate the challenges of sustainability into their core business practices. Sustainable development has been included in industry agendas, and several national and international initiatives have developed frameworks for sustainability. Environmental management includes a wide variety of practices, both compulsory and voluntary (ie, environmental management systems and life cycle assessment).
