Debido a la crisis petrolera de la década de 1970 se buscaron nuevos recursos energéticos en el mundo, La Guajira, por tener las reservas más grandes de Latinoamérica, juega un papel estratégico. Este departamento está ubicado en el extremo norte del país. La explotación del carbón por parte de El Cerrejón inició en 1985, convirtiéndose en la mina a cielo abierto más grande del mundo. Desde ese momento, ha generado millones de dólares en ingresos para la compañía pero muy poco para Colombia y especialmente, para la región, aunque esta actividad es su principal fuente económica. El Cerrejón es un mundo de contrastes en los aspectos económicos, sociales y ambientales y nacen interrogantes sobre si esta actividad es positiva o negativa y si ha traído prosperidad y calidad de vida a sus habitantes o por el contrario ha sido perjudicial para esta región. La minería en el Cerrejón ha generado avances y beneficios a la sociedad pero también impactos al medio ambiente, sobre estos últimos se han hecho estudios, la gran mayoría arrojando resultados negativos. El gobierno ha promulgado leyes sobre la minería, la responsabilidad de los mineros, responsabilidad con el medio ambiente y castigos en dado caso que no se cumpla lo reglamentado. |
