description La caracterización de Colombia como un país de tránsito, se ha hecho más evidente en los últimos años y ha cobrado especial relevancia al momento de diagnosticar el fenómeno del tráfico ilícito de migrantes en el territorio, identificando que su componente altamente fronterizo a nivel terrestre y marítimo y su posición geográfica, favorecen esta condición. En general, Colombia es utilizada como una plataforma de tránsito en las rutas que establecen las organizaciones delincuenciales de tráfico desde Suramérica, pasando por Centroamérica hasta llegar a países como Estados Unidos y Canadá. Es tarea compleja evaluar la dimensión real de este delito, debido a su naturaleza clandestina y a la dificultad para determinar cuándo la migración irregular es facilitada por los coyotes. Sin embargo, el gran número de migrantes dispuestos a correr riesgos en busca de una vida mejor, cuando no pueden emigrar por vías legales, brinda una provechosa oportunidad a los delincuentes para explotar su vulnerabilidad.
