En el Instituto Nacional de Cancerología de acuerdo a las estadísticas publicadas para el año 2010, el cáncer de piel es el primer cáncer en frecuencia con 20.1% del total de pacientes atendidos por primera vez. Por dificultades con los registros es difícil saber exactamente cuantos de estos casos afectan la piel y mucosa de los labios. En la literatura mundial se acepta que el 86% del cáncer de piel se localiza en la cabeza. De estos casos el 5% corresponde a cáncer de piel localizado en labio superior. Aunque el impacto de la morbilidad de este tipo de entidades no es claramente medido sus secuelas en términos de cicatrices, alteración estética y compromiso funcional son altamente reconocidos pero subvalorados. Es por esto que en el desarrollo de la cirugía reconstructiva se han propuesto múltiples técnicas para reconstrucción de labio superior cada una con ventajas y limitaciones frente a las otras.Skin cancer is the most frequent cancer in men. In the National Institute of Cancerology according to statistics published for the year 2010, skin cancer is the first cancer in frequency with 20.1% of the total number of patients attended for the first time.
