description Los plásticos de un solo uso representan un gran desafío ambiental ya que por su popularidad de bajo costo y practicidad han generado una cultura de “usar y tirar”. La mayoría de los plásticos nunca llegan a desaparecer por completo, solo se degradan y se fragmentan en piezas más pequeñas convirtiéndose en microplásticos. Una vez se alcanza esta etapa, se vuelve aún más difícil de retirar de los ecosistemas, agravando su impacto ambiental. Esta problemática ha generado una creciente preocupación global dando lugar a implementar políticas orientadas a frenar o prohibir su consumo. A través de una exhaustiva revisión bibliográfica de las últimas dos décadas, se analizaron políticas implementadas en diversos contextos geográficos y socioeconómicos, identificando enfoques como la prohibición total o parcial de productos plásticos de un solo uso, la aplicación de impuestos, la implementación de sistemas de depósito y devolución (SDR) y la responsabilidad extendida del productor (REP). Casos destacados incluyen altas tasas de reciclaje logradas en Suecia y Alemania, la legislación pionera en América Latina liderada por Chile, y las iniciativas de Colombia para sumarse en la reducción del consumo de plásticos de un solo uso. Los resultados indican que, si bien se han logrado avances significativos, persisten desafíos relacionados con la infraestructura, la educación ambiental y la gobernanza efectiva. La experiencia de países desarrollados sugiere que un marco normativo sólido y estricto, acompañado de incentivos económicos y tecnológicos, es clave para abordar este problema de manera integral.

La experiencia de países desarrollados sugiere que un marco normativo sólido y estricto, acompañado de incentivos económicos y tecnológicos, es clave para abordar este problema de manera integral.Single-use plastics represent a great environmental challenge since, due to their popularity, low cost and practicality, they have generated a “use and throw away” culture. Most plastics never disappear completely, they only degrade and fragment into smaller pieces, becoming microplastics. Once this stage is reached, it becomes even more difficult to remove from ecosystems, worsening its environmental impact. This problem has generated growing global concern, leading to the implementation of policies aimed at stopping or prohibiting its consumption. Through an exhaustive bibliographic review of the last two decades, policies implemented in various geographic and socioeconomic contexts were analyzed, identifying approaches such as the total or partial prohibition of single-use plastic products, the application of taxes, the implementation of deposit and return (SDR) and extended producer responsibility (REP). Notable cases include high recycling rates achieved in Sweden and Germany, pioneering legislation in Latin America led by Chile, and Colombia's initiatives to join in reducing the consumption of single-use plastics. The results indicate that, while significant progress has been made, challenges related to infrastructure, environmental education, and effective governance persist.
