La capital del departamento es la ciudad de Mitú. Este municipio en la actualidad posee un grave problema de abastecimiento de los productos básicos para la subsistencia del ser humano, dadas las condiciones de los suelos y las pobres técnicas de cultivos chagras los cuales según SINCHI (instituto amazónico de investigaciones científicas), son policultivos que requieren de la tala del territorio para la preparación de los suelos para la explotación y siembra, pero dadas las condiciones de humedad y acidez los cultivos no tienen mucho éxito para su producción. Dada esta problemática este municipio acude a la compra de los productos para subsistencia diaria a ciudades como Bogotá y Villavicencio. Teniendo en cuenta que las únicas formas de transporte al territorio son vía aérea y fluvial los costos gravados a estos productos son bastante altos debido a los altos fletes y a la escasez de compañías aéreas y fluviales que tengan destino en esta ciudad.The Department of Vaupés is located in the north of the Colombian Amazon and is a territory rich in biodiversity.
