description El delirium postoperatorio se define como una enfermedad aguda, una complicación de múltiples comorbilidades involucradas en la alteración del estado de conciencia que lleva a problemas para la concentración, regular o centrar la atención por un periodo de tiempo. Puede ser debido a edad avanzada, fracturas, deshidratación, alcoholismo y/o disrupciones metabólicas, factores que si son sumados a cirugías ortopédicas pueden incrementar su aparición en los cuidados postoperatorios. Por otra parte, hay evidencia de que la técnica anestésica, ya sea general o regional, puede ser un factor que contribuye a la aparición de este tipo de enfermedades. La prevención y reconocimiento temprano de esta patología evita el aumento en la estancia hospitalaria de estos pacientes y reduce las complicaciones que esto causa y mitigar los costos para el sistema de salud.

It can be due to old age, fractures, dehydration, alcoholism and/or metabolic disruption, factors that being added to orthopedic surgeries can increase its emergence on postoperative care. On the other hand, there is evidence that the type of anesthetic indulgence such as the use of a general technique or neuraxial, can be a contributing factor on the occurrence of this type of disease.
