To illustrate it, the examples of the emerald zone and Barrancabermeja, where the paramilitary territorial control is defined in function of a vocation for local and regional powers are presented. Is this conjunction which keeps the cohesion of such groups in spite of fissures and tensions and even of the real or virtual disappearance of Carlos Castaño.Este artículo propone una revisión del fenómeno del paramilitarismo a partir de la consideración de dos elementos claves: poder y tierra. A diferencia de otros analistas e investigadores sociales que centran la explicación del paramilitarismo en las disputas en torno a la propiedad agraria, el autor considera que la cuestión de la tierra esta vinculada a la definición de un proyecto político de carácter local. Para ilustrarlo se presentan los ejemplos de la zona esmeraldifera y de Barrancabermeja, en donde el control territorial paramilitar esta definido en función de una vocación por los poderes locales y regionales.
