Con fuentes primarias procedentes de los archivos: Histórico Nacional de Madrid, Nacional de Historia de Quito, General de Indias de Sevilla y General de la Nación de Bogotá; se ha pretendido reconstruir los orígenes, la estructura, el funcionamiento, la rentabilidad y la función social y simbólica de los mayorazgos objeto de estudio: Con ello se busca mostrar algunos de los rasgos más relevantes de ésta institución colonial en los Andes septentrionales.  SUMMARYThis article presents a brief characterization of the marorazgo criollo as opposed to the Castillian one, and a comparative study between the mayorazgo of Bogotá (Colombia) and that of Cayambe (Ecuador), both founded in the XVII century. Using sources such as the following archives: Histórico Nacional of Madrid, Nacional de Historia of Quito, General de Indias of Sevilla, and General de la Nación of Bogotá, I have tried to reconstruct the origins, the structure, the functioning, the incomeyield capacity and the social and symbolic function of the mayorazgos object of this study.
