Many authors have recognized that there’s a close relationship between oral and general health and emphasize the persistence of diseases that could have been prevented despite improvement in oral health status in some countries. Disease prevention is defined and its action field is delimited. An invitation is proposed in order to introduce recent concepts about both dental caries and periodontal disease, as well as risk assessment, in a new prevention perspective. Prevention is conceived as a day to day philosophy, beyond techniques, procedures and preestablished protocols. |

Prevention is conceived as a day to day philosophy, beyond techniques, procedures and preestablished protocols.RESUMEN: Se presenta una revisión de algunos argumentos que llevan a concluir que la prevención no solamente constituye un campo con enormes posibilidades sino también una responsabilidad de la profesión odontológica. Se parte del creciente reconocimiento de la estrecha relación que existe entre salud bucal y salud general y de la persistencia de enfermedades prevenibles —pese a los avances en salud bucal logrados por algunos países—. Se define el concepto de prevención de la enfermedad, se delimita su campo de acción y se propone la adopción tanto de conceptos recientes sobre modelos explicativos de caries dental y enfermedad periodontal como de un enfoque de riesgo, en una invitación a replantear, desde estas perspectivas, las acciones preventivas tradicionalmente empleadas por la profesión.
