description RESUMEN: El análisis del proceso de formación del concepto de prehistoria en el siglo XIX, brinda elementos interpretativos para la comprensión de las tensiones y tentativas de acercamiento entre la arqueología y la historia en épocas posteriores. La identificación del contexto de emergencia de los enunciados que en su articulación dieron forma al concepto de prehistoria, esto es, ausencia de escritura y antecedencia respecto de la historia, indica que las fronteras entre ambos campos de conocimiento no se pueden negociar únicamente en términos metodológicos o cronológicos. Se propone que la ausencia de escritura como marcador por excelencia de una humanidad prehistórica, tiene que ver más con el valor político y moral que el pensamiento de Occidente otorgó al tiempo y a los dispositivos escritutarios, por contraste con la poca importancia dada al espacio y las materialidades.

Identification of the context of emergence of the terms that articulate the concept of prehistory, that is, the absence of writing and its antecedence with respect to history, indicates that the borders between the two fields of knowledge can not be negotiated only in terms of methodology and chronology.
