RESUMEN: El artículo presenta los resultados de la investigación con el mismo nombre, cuyo objetivo fue identificar y determinar el papel de los bibliotecarios como protagonistas del desarrollo de la biblioteca pública en Medellín (Colombia), poniendo de relieve sus relaciones con la historia y la tradición educativa y cultural de la ciudad. A partir de un enfoque cualitativo y con el desarrollo de técnicas de investigación documental, se hace, en primer lugar, una contextualización histórica del oficio de bibliotecario en Colombia, atendiendo los proyectos políticos, sociales y culturales que se desarrollaron en el amplio marco temporal, para mirar la historia de los bibliotecarios en Medellín. En la segunda parte se traza la estrategia de propagación de la lectura ilustrada en la difusión de una lectura útil. Este modelo, predominante en el siglo XVIII europeo, encuentra en Colombia un interesante ejemplo con la profusión de revistas y diarios, bien de carácter religioso u orientados a la difusión de perspectivas morales determinadas y, por supuesto, en la creación de bibliotecas que configuran el papel de los bibliotecarios y sus relaciones con la tradición educativa y cultural de Medellín. |

Based on a qualitative focus and with the development of documental research techniques, the paper does, first, a historical contextualization of the librarian profession in Colombia, with reference to the political, social, and cultural projects that were developed in the broad temporary frame, to view the history of librarians in Medellín. The second part traces the propagation strategy for illustrated reading in the dissemination of useful reading.
