Data of BC, BW scores and blood sampling, for progesterone determination, were weekly collected since calving until the second estrous postpartum. Cows were divided in two groups G1 (n = 11) between 450 and 480 kg and G2 (n = 7) weighting around 500 and 520 kg. Animals from G1 had a mean of 71 open days while G2 cows had 107 days; 3 cows of this G2 group had 210 open days. The loss weight was higher (p < 0.005) in G2 (35 kg) than in G1 (16 kg) during the experiment period. The 3 cows of G2 previously mentioned lost about 70 kg of the initial weight. All of the animals maintained a constant BC between 3,4 and 3,5. The 18 calves reported daily BW gain of about 600 to 850 g until a mean of 110 kg of weight at the end on the study. The mean serum progesterone concentrations were normal for the 3 groups. The results show that maintenance of BC without dramatical loses of BW give the capacity to the cow to insure good BW gain for calves and to have an early postpartum resumption of ovarian activity. |

The results show that maintenance of BC without dramatical loses of BW give the capacity to the cow to insure good BW gain for calves and to have an early postpartum resumption of ovarian activity.RESUMEN: Para determinar la influencia de la variación del peso y condición corporal de la madre y de la variación del peso corporal del ternero en la recuperación ovárica posparto, se seleccionaron 18 vacas de la raza cebú Brahmán, multíparas, en amamantamiento permanente y sus 18 terneros. Para esto se realizaron pesajes, evaluación de la condición corporal y sangrados de la vena coccígea semanalmente desde el parto hasta la detección del segundo celo posparto. Según los días abiertos (D.A.) de las vacas, se dividieron en 3 grupos: vacas de menos de 90 D.A., (G1, n = 8), entre 90 y 150 D.A. (G2, n = 7) y vacas de más de 150 D.A. (g3, n = 3). Los animales con menos D.A. reportaron menor peso corporal (490 ± 44 kg) con respecto a los animales del G2 (510 ± 40 kg). El grupo G3 presento un promedio de peso de 480 kg. La pérdida de peso fue superior (p < 0.05) para el G2 (35 kg) comparada con el G1 de 16 kg durante el tiempo del experimento (15 semanas). Para los animales de G3 ya mencionados, hubo pérdidas aproximadamente 70 kg de peso inicial. Todas las vacas mantuvieron la condición corporal constante entre 3.4 y 3.5. Los 18 terneros presentaron ganancias de peso diarias de 600 a 850 g alcanzando los 100 kg al final del experimento. Los perfiles de progesterona para G1 y G2 fueron normales; el grupo G3 tuvo una reactivación ovárica posparto temprana (21 días), pero no hubo presentación de celo durante el tiempo del experimento.
