description ABSTRACT: This paper presents a balance between the botanic and the ethnographic studies dealing with the fishing poisons used by indigenous groups of both the Orinoquia and the Amazonian’s basins in Colombia. In the first place, a description of the use of these species in each indigenous group is made and their pharmacological properties are characterized. Next, an analysis is made about the traits of these poisons and their repercussions in the symbolic universe of the groups. The study explains, particularly, why women in most indigenous groups are forbidden to manipulate those poisons. Despite comprising a great region where various ethnic groups of different linguistic families live, the analysis shows that they share many common elements in terms of myths and beliefs associated with the venoms.

En primer lugar se describe el uso de estas especies en cada grupo indígena y se caracterizan sus propiedades farmacológicas. En segundo lugar se analizan las características de estos venenos y sus repercusiones en el universo simbólico. El trabajo explica, en particular, por qué en la mayoría de los grupos indígenas las mujeres tienen prohibido manipular los venenos.
