RESUMEN: El objetivo de este estudio fue hacer un diagnóstico actual de la producción científica de investigadores iberoamericanos en competencias de información y alfabetización de la información durante las últimas cuatro décadas. El resultado de la literatura sobre alfabetización informacional se examinó utilizando las técnicas de análisis bibliométrico y visualización de la información. La literatura considerada fue la constituida por los artículos incluidos en la Web of Science (Thomson Reuters), Scopus (Elsevier), Library and Information Science Abstracts y Library, Information Science and Technology Abstracts. La ocurrencia de descriptores se analizó utilizando VOSViewer, un programa que los agrupa en grupos y genera un mapa de sus conexiones. Los resultados mostraron un crecimiento exponencial de alrededor del 30% anual entre 2005 y 2011, con una media de 14,45 documentos por año. España, con 119 documentos, fue el principal país productor, seguido por Brasil con 76. La distribución de los más de 500 autores se ajustó a un patrón de ley Lotka, y la distribución de las 105 revistas se ajustó a las tres zonas de un patrón de Bradford-law . El mapa de visualización mostró los 62 descriptores para agrupar en siete grupos. Por su centralidad, se destacó la "alfabetización informacional", fuertemente relacionada con la "ciencia de la información". En el borde del mapa se encontraban "Alfabetización digital" y "Biblioteca de la escuela", indicativos de su falta de una relación fuerte con otros términos. The literature output on information literacy was examined using the techniques of bibliometric analysis and information visualization. The literature considered was that constituted by the articles included in the Web of Science (Thomson Reuters), Scopus (Elsevier), Library and Information Science Abstracts, and Library, Information Science and Technology Abstracts databases. The occurrence of descriptors was analysed using VOSViewer, a program that groups them into clusters and generates a map of their connections. The results showed exponential growth of some 30 % annually between 2005 and 2011, with a mean of 14.45 documents per year. Spain, with 119 documents, was the top producing country, followed by Brazil with 76. The distribution of the more than 500 authors fitted a Lotka-law pattern, and the distribution of the 105 journals fitted the three zones of a Bradford-law pattern. The visualization map showed the 62 descriptors to group into seven clusters. For its centrality, there stood out “Information literacy”, strongly related with “Information Science”. At the edge of the map were “Digital literacy” and “School library”, indicative of their lack of any strong relationship with other terms.
