| description |

The construction industry, despite its economic and social importance, is a sector with a high environmental impact. It contributes significantly to the generation of large quantities of greenhouse gas emissions, adversely affects water, land, and natural resources, and generates vast amounts of waste. For this reason, the transition to a circular economy presents itself as a solution that could help mitigate these impacts during key stages, such as construction and the demolition or abandonment phase when a structure reaches its end-of-life. This paper proposes the evaluation of a circular economy strategy for the management of Construction and Demolition (C&D) waste in Colombia through the development of a system dynamics simulation model, taking a holistic view of the system's different stages and key processes. A literature review was conducted to characterize the C&D sector and identify applicable circular economy strategies, which were used to define the system's boundaries. Subsequently, the scope of the model was defined, including key stakeholders: mining companies, suppliers, government bodies, professional consultants, distributors and retailers, manufacturers and subcontractors, clients, demolition companies, waste recycling companies, landfill site operators, waste collection companies, shareholders, impacted communities, and their respective workers and supervisors. The five stages of the system were also defined: extraction; transportation; material processing and manufacturing of construction products; construction and maintenance; and abandonment, demolition, and end-of-life management. Causal relationships between the main variables of the system were established, and an application case was built for the project. This case study addressed the extraction of limestone material necessary for manufacturing cement and, subsequently, concrete key element in the construction sector. The study tracked the material through all stages, observing how C&D waste was generated and how it fed the sector's sinks, namely legal and sanitary landfills as well as illegal dumpsites. To visualize this phenomenon, a simulation model was constructed using system dynamics software. The model validated that growth in the construction sector across its various stages generates a constant increase of waste in the system's sinks. Finally, a circular economy strategy was defined to aid in waste reduction: the "improvement of on-site waste management practices." This strategy demonstrated an approximate 40% reduction in the quantity of waste reaching the designated sinks.Tabla de contenido Resumen..........................................................................................................................................9 Abstract ..........................................................................................................................................11 1.
