RESUMEN: Los estudios transversales son estudios epidemiológicos de observación en los cuales la inferencia causal no se rige por la secuencia lógica de medir primero un predictor y, transcurrido un tiempo, medir el efecto de la exposición, como se hace cuando se realiza un estudio de cohorte. En los ET, los investigadores llevan a cabo todas las mediciones en una sola ocasión, aunque esta medición tarde un tiempo en hacerse en todos los sujetos de la muestra. En la manera usual como se realizan los ET, primero se toma una muestra de la población que se desea estudiar en un determinado aspecto y se observa luego la distribución de las variables que previamente se han escogido como predictoras del desenlace; después los investigadores hacen inferencias sobre las relaciones de causa-efecto, a partir de las asociaciones encontradas entre las variables escogidas y los resultados. Los ET son muy apropiados para describir variables y sus patrones de distribución (estudios de prevalencia, EP) pero también pueden usarse para examinar asociaciones |
