Sexual dimorphism studied by the Student t-test afforded a slightly high number of dimorphic dimensions when compared with Kolmogorov-Smirnov test for two independent samples. However, t-test showed similar results to the F-test (One way ANOVA) applied by Rosique et al. (2004) in a previous article. MDI (Mean Distance Index) calculation yielded values higher tan 5% in those dimensions diagnosed as highly dimorphic by all the statistical test. Kolmogorov-Smirnov, for two samples, was recomended when variables depart from normality. Both, univariate analysis and discriminant analysis showed the mandible had a higher diagnostic power with respect to the cranium. MDI calculation showed less sexual dimorphism in the present sample with respect to a contemporary sample from Bogotá studied by Rodríguez Cuenca (2002).

MDI calculation showed less sexual dimorphism in the present sample with respect to a contemporary sample from Bogotá studied by Rodríguez Cuenca (2002).RESUMEN:Se estudiaron 21 dimensiones en cráneo y mandíbula para analizar el dimorfismo sexual en una muestra de población contemporánea de Medellín, utilizando con fines comparativos tres métodos diferentes de estima del dimorfismo sexual. La magnitud de éste, estimada mediante la t de Student proporcionó un número ligeramente mayor de dimensiones dimórficas que el test de Kolmogorov-Smirnov (KS) para muestras independientes. Sin embargo, la t de Student mostró resultados similares a los del test de la F (ANOVA) aplicado por Rosique et al. (2004) en un estudio precedente. El cálculo del MDI (Mean Distance Index) fue superior al 5% en las dimensiones diagnosticadas simultáneamente como dimórficas por los tres test de significación (t, F y KS). El test de Kolmogorov-Smirnov se evidenció como recomendable para estimar el dimorfi smo sexual, frente a los otros tests, para varias dimensiones. Tanto el análisis univariado como el análisis discriminante evidenciaron un mayor poder diagnóstico de la mandíbula respecto al cráneo.
