In this regard, the study of the territory emerges as ascientific problem of contemporary interest.RESUMEN: En la actualidad, con fundamento en los postulados de la geografía, en particular de la geografía crítica (Harvey, 2003, 2007; Santos, 1996, 1997, 2000), ha renacido el interés académico y científico por el tema del territorio y, muy especialmente, por su estudio. Ello exige, de un lado, recrear y elaborar nociones sobre territorio acertadas, adecuadas y pertinentes al contexto societal vigente y, del otro lado, precisar a qué se alude cuando de estudiarlo se trata, en virtud a que ello se constituye en una potencialidad socio-espacial contemporánea para entenderlo, explorarlo, apropiarlo y emplearlo como soporte de procesos sociales, económicos, políticos, ambientales y territoriales y, entre otros, comunicacionales, vinculados con la transformación de la realidad y su orientación a escenarios de desarrollo, mejoramiento de las condiciones y la calidad de vida del conjunto de la población.
