We used the Epi - Info version 3.4.3 software and the standard of the 2000 NCHS (National Center for Health Statistics). The socio-cultural conditions were analyzed by a food survey of 24- hour recall to 132 individuals and an activity recall questionnaire to 126 children. Some overweight children were selected for participant observation and interviews. The distribution curve of the total sample weight for age in mean z scores showed bias to the right. In the classification of bmi, 41.6 % of the total sample were overweight or at risk of overweight. The amount of fat pads showed a high percentage of obesity and 16 % of the sample had excess adiposity. These results relate to large consumption of high-calorie foods and prevailing sedentary habits. |

These results relate to large consumption of high-calorie foods and prevailing sedentary habits.RESUMEN: Se evaluó el estado de malnutrición por sobrepeso y obesidad y las condiciones socioculturales de la vida cotidiana en 274 estudiantes de ambos sexos de entre siete y once años de edad de la ciudad de Orizaba, Veracruz. Se articularon métodos cuantitativos y cualitativos y se analizaron los índices de peso para la edad, el índice de masa corporal (imc) y la suma de panículos. Se utilizó el programa Epi – Info versión 3.4.3 y el estándar NCHS 2000 (National Center Health Statistics). Con el objeto de indagar sobre las condiciones socioculturales, se aplicó una encuesta alimentaria de recordatorio de 24 horas a 132 individuos y una encuesta de recordatorio de actividades a 126 niños y niñas. Además se seleccionaron algunos niños con sobrepeso para aplicarles entrevistas y hacer observación participante. La curva de distribución de la muestra total de peso para la edad en la media de puntuaciones de z mostró sesgo a la derecha. En la clasificación del IMC, 41.6 % de la muestra total presentó sobrepeso o riesgo de sobrepeso. La suma de panículos adiposos evidenció un porcentaje alto de obesidad y 16 % de la muestra presentó exceso de adiposidad.
