RESUMEN: Objetivos: comprender el significado del cuidado de enfermería para los pacientes que han sufrido un trauma. Los datos se recogieron entre marzo de 2006 y diciembre de 2007, se entrevistaron 15 personas adultas que estuvieron hospitalizadas después de padecer un trauma. El estudio concluyó en noviembre de 2008. Resultados: el cuidado de enfermería significó ayuda orientada hacia la satisfacción de las necesidades físicas y de tratamiento de los pacientes, además de compañía, esperanza, comprensión y seguridad. Entendiéndose esta última como la garantía de calidad en el cuidado y la tranquilidad de ser atendidos directamente por el profesional de enfermería. Conclusión: los participantes en este estudio reconocen y describen paso a paso el cuidado de enfermería como interacciones que se dan entre ellos y la profesional que les ayuda en la ejecución de las actividades que contribuyen al mantenimiento o recuperación de su salud, justifica mantener las metas de enfermería. Dado que el cuidado por parte del profesional de enfermería da seguridad, se recomienda iniciar un trabajo activo con el fin de que éstos retomen el cuidado directo de los pacientes en las salas de hospitalización y se incentiven estudios que lleven a evidenciar el costo-beneficio al prestar un servicio con estas características. |

Method: qualitative, with a focus on particularistic ethnography, applicable to any social unit or human group that can be isolated. Data collection was done between March 2006 and December 2007, and 15 adults who were hospitalized after suffering trauma were interviewed. The study was completed in November 2008. Results: Nursing care means help aimed at satisfying the physical and treatment needs of patients, as well as their need for companionship, hope, understanding and a sense of security. The latter is understood as a guarantee of quality care and the peace of mind that comes with being cared for directly by a nursing professional. Conclusion: Having found that the patients in the study acknowledge nursing care and describe it step-by-step as interaction between themselves and the professional who assists them in carrying out activities that help to preserve or restore their health, justifies maintaining the goals of nursing. Inasmuch as the care provided by a professional nurse affords a sense of security, it is recommended that an active effort be made to have nurses resume caring for patients directly in hospital wards.
