RESUMEN: El Cementerio Universal es el primer cementerio municipal de carácter civil proyectado para la ciudad de Medellín. La preocupación por la salud pública y el crecimiento demográfico, se sumaron a la carencia de cementerios públicos que proveyeran de espacio para albergar a los muertos pertenecientes a la población pobre y laica de la ciudad. En los años treinta, del siglo veinte, el Municipio de Medellín abrió una convocatoria pública que otorgó el premio al proyecto presentado por el ingeniero y artista Pedro Nel Gómez, cuya ejecución se realizó en varias etapas, sin que fuera culminado en su totalidad. En la actualidad, la obra presenta alto grado de deterioro, que pone en riesgo no solo la obra sino su significación histórica y cultural. Este trabajo busca poner en evidencia el sentido, valor, pertinencia y significación del proyecto artístico, arquitectónico y funerario, a partir de la exposición de las necesidades, momentos y coyunturas temporales e históricas que permitieron el desarrollo del proyecto y su construcción. Al ahondar en lo contextual, el trabajo interpreta las concepciones ideológicas, los imaginarios sobre la muerte, las concepciones sobre los cementerios, la estratificación social de la muerte en el entorno de la cultura en la ciudad, y la importancia e impacto de la intervención arquitectónica del Maestro Pedro Nel Gómez, en el desarrollo urbano. |
