This book was forbidden by the Inquisition, both, author and dialogue, were indicted of being proslavery and was printed only 300 years later on 1892. However, studying Sepulveda’s personal life, his social status and education gives a reassessment to his book and legacy.

However, studying Sepulveda’s personal life, his social status and education gives a reassessment to his book and legacy.RESUMEN: El Demócrates II o Tratado de las justas causas de la guerra contra los indios fue quizás el escrito más controvertido del humanista Juan Ginés de Sepúlveda. Surgió como respuesta a críticas que en su momento se daban sobre la licitud de la concesión papal de los nuevos territorios descubiertos y las acciones españolas que lejos de afirmar su pretendida imagen de evangelizadores y protectores de los nativos, los presentaba como unas huestes guiadas por la avaricia y la codicia. Dicho texto fue censurado por la Inquisición, y fue impreso por primera vez más de 300 años más tarde en 1892. Como resultado tanto autor como obra fueron blanco de críticas, al ser tildado como esclavista y partidario de los excesos cometidos por los conquistadores.
