The behavior of the wild birds or “pájaros del monte”, of the rabbit, of the fox and of the buzzard raises reflections on the human condition which are transmitted to children and young people through different genres of oral tradition.

Cuentos, refranes, cantos, rondas infantiles, coplas y versos que acompañan danzas de carnaval, reflejan el saber popular sobre la fauna y los sentimientos que las distintas especies inspiran. El comportamiento de los “pájaros del monte”, del conejo, de la zorra y del zopilote suscita reflexiones sobre la condición humana que se transmiten a los niños y jóvenes a través de los distintos géneros de la tradición oral.Este artículo se deriva de un estudio más extenso, aún sin publicar, en el cual Sandra Turbay, Gustavo Albeiro Gómez, Alba Doris López, Claudia Alzate y Olma Juny Álvarez analizaron los conocimientos sobre los animales entre los pobladores de la Depresión Momposina, y su expresión en el arte, la música, el lenguaje, el juego, el cuento y el ritual (Turbay, 1999). Bachilleres de la región colaboraron recogiendo información con sus familiares y vecinos.
