The source of the data was the death registry run by the DANE that has a coverage close to 100%; almost 50% of the potencial years of life lost was due to intentional injury; also, accidental injury, perinatal causes, cardiovascular diseases and malign neoplasmas ranked first among the various subgroups of causes. Large differences were detected in the population average of potencial years of life lost among the different socioeconomic strata, the low one having the highest. Some strategies for prevention and health promotion are proposed that should be implemented in the low socioeconomic strata as a top priority. |

Some strategies for prevention and health promotion are proposed that should be implemented in the low socioeconomic strata as a top priority.RESUMEN: La presente investigación da a conocer la magnitud y la distribución de los años potenciales de vida perdidos por la población de Medellín durante el periodo 1994-1996 por diferentes agrupaciones de causas, edad, sexo y nivel socioeconómico. Se utilizó como fuente de información el registro de mortalidad del Departamento Administrativo Nacional de Estadística DANE, cuya cobertura en la ciudad es cercana al 100%. Casi el 50% de todos los anos potenciales de vida perdidos se debe a las lesiones; ademas, las lesiones accidentales, las afecciones perinatales, las enfermedades cardiovasculares y las neoplasias malignas figuran en las primeras posiciones. El promedio de anos potenciales de vida perdidos fue mayor en el nivel socioeconómico bajo y presenta grandes diferencias con los observados en los niveles medio y alto.
