RESUMEN: En los últimos años se ha desarrollado en la enseñanza de la medicina un nuevo movimiento: la medicina basada en la evidencia. En trauma no hay un importante número de estudios de alto nivel metodológico que apoye la práctica cotidiana del cirujano. Es importante incorporar la medicina basada en la evidencia en los programas de pregrado y posgrado, y que los cirujanos de trauma conozcan cómo encontrar, evaluar y construir la evidencia que respalde los actos médicos de su disciplina.La buena práctica frente al paciente traumatizado es aquélla en la que el cirujano de trauma, consciente de las condiciones impuestas por el medio,con base en el estado de salud del paciente, es capaz de integrar estos elementos por medio de su pericia y experiencia clínica acumulada, con la mejor evidencia derivada de investigaciones, para dar una respuesta satisfactoria a las necesidades de su paciente. Este artículo presenta algunos conceptos históricos,la definición de medicina basada en la evidencia y los pasos para practicarla, y discute algunos problemas específicos para practicar la cirugía de trauma basada en la evidencia. |

In the field of trauma there are not enough studies of high methodological quality that can support with external evidence the physician ́s daily practice. It is important to incorporate the teaching of evidence-based medicine in the undergraduate and postgraduate educational programs, and to teach trauma surgeons how to search, evaluate, and build-up the evidence needed to support their professional activity. Good trauma practice is that in which the trauma surgeon, conscious of the conditions imposed by the environment and based upon the state of the patient ́s health, is capable of integrating these elements -by means of expertise and clinical experience- with the best evidence generated by quality studies.
