Therefore, hyperglycemia is a common consequence of diabetes that is not adequately controlled, and that over time can seriously damage important organs such as “the heart, blood vessels, eyes, kidneys and nerves” (1). Likewise, the WHO estimates that in 2014 there are about 422 million adults with diabetes in the world, compared to the number of people affected in 1980 when it was confirmed that there were 108 million people suffering from this pathology. Since this date, the global prevalence of diabetes has increased approximately twice as much in adults (4.7% to 8.5%), as a consequence of overweight and obesity (1). As a result, DM affects ocular structures such as: the tear gland, being the most altered (70%), followed by the conjunctiva. In addition, diabetes is subdivided into type 1 and type 2. Type 1 DM represents the smallest number of patients suffering from this pathology, mainly affecting the child and young population (2). Regarding type 2 DM, the main manifestations that occur with ocular problems are: dry eye (SO) (3),(4),(5) and diabetic corneal neuropathy (DCN) (3),(5),(6).UAN Proyectos de ciencia, tecnología, innovación y creación artísticaSegún la OMS, la diabetes se considera como: “una enfermedad crónica grave que sobreviene cuando el páncreas no produce suficiente insulina (hormona que regula la glucemia) o cuando el organismo no puede usar eficazmente la insulina que produce” (1). Por ende, la hiperglucemia, es una consecuencia común de la diabetes que no tiene un adecuado control, y que a través del tiempo puede lesionar gravemente los órganos importantes como “el corazón, los vasos sanguíneos, los ojos, los riñones y los nervios” (1). Así mismo, la OMS calcula que en 2014 hay cerca de 422 millones de personas adultas con diabetes en el mundo, en comparación con la cantidad de afectados en 1980 donde se confirmó que había 108 millones de personas que padecían de esta patología. Desde esta fecha la prevalencia mundial de la diabetes ha incrementado aproximadamente el doble en personas adultas (4,7% a 8,5%), como consecuencias del sobrepeso y la obesidad (1). Como resultado, la DM afecta a nivel ocular estructuras como: la glándula lagrimal, siendo la más alterada (70%), seguido de la conjuntiva. Además, la diabetes se subdivide en tipo 1 y tipo 2. La DM tipo1 representa la menor cantidad de pacientes que padecen esta patología, principalmente afecta a la población infantil y joven (2).
