Summary:This research deals with the study of the emerging field of medical tourism in the city of Cartagena de Indias. The work was divided into four parts. The first presents a conceptual framework for the study of the phenomena associated with medical tourism. The second part analyzes the reasons that energize the city of Cartagena as a destination of medical tourism is developed. In the third part a characterization of the medical tourism offer is made and the opportunities and challenges facing this activity for development are identified. In the fourth part the conclusions and recommendations of the study are made. The study found that the city of Cartagena exhibits advantages for the development of health, such as its strategic location and wealth of natural, historical and tourist attractions. In addition, prices are competitive and the quality of medical procedures is highlighted. However, the problems associated with the shortage of hospital infrastructure and healthcare, coupled with local health needs and low levels of foreign language management are the main challenges facing this activity.
