Se seleccionaron cuatro personas, tres mujeres y un hombre, que estaban como pacientes en el Instituto Cancerológico de Medellín. Se encontró que estas personas se confrontan con la muerte, llevándolos a tomar conciencia de sentimientos de desamparo, miedo, indefensión y soledad. Esta situación posibilita en las personas cambios en su ser, evidenciados a través de la reconstruccción del significado y sentido de su vida, generando también cambios en la relación con las personas, y en las actitudes frente a la religión, sus valores, sus creencias y sus actos creativos, así reconfigurando su capacidad de elección, decisión y responsabilidad frente a su existencia.The aim of this study was to identify and understand, from the existential phenomenology, the events and changes in the being of people with cancer in terminal phase. A qualitative method, by in-depth interviews, was applied,. Three women and a man, all of them patients at the Instituto Cancerológico of Medellín, were involved in the research. It was found that these people are confronted with death, leading them to become aware of feelings of abandonment, fear, helplessness and solitude.
