Summary:Since 2000, the proper management of medical waste has acquired considerable importance in Cartagena, since only 9% of doctors and hospitals in the city gives a correct treatment. Medical waste pose a risk to the health of medical, paramedical and nursing staff as well as patients, visitors, waste collection staff and community in general, besides the environmental risk arising therefrom. This article is a descriptive study of reflective type, based on the law applicable to the separation and disposal of hospital waste, which seeks to analyze, according to current regulations, the risk factors for human health and environmental impacts associated to the comprehensive management of waste in the Napoleon Franco Pareja children’s hospital and to assess their current situation in order to propose recommendations for the management of hospital waste.
