Moral disengagement refers to the use of cognitive strategies to reframe harmful behavior as morally acceptable and to avoid feelings of guilt for the harm caused. However, the various ways in which socioaffective factors such as empathy, sensitivity, and emotional self-efficacy (or lack thereof) interact with moral disengagement to produce differential effects on the social behavior of adolescents and delinquent youth remain unclear. The objective of this research is to analyze the effect of moral disengagement as a mediator in the association between regulatory emotional self-efficacy, empathy, callous-unemotional traits and antisocial-delinquent and prosocial behaviors in adolescents and young people in conflict with the law (Colombia). This was quantitative, prospective research with a non-experimental, cross-sectional design and an associative-explanatory scope. Based on a non-probabilistic sampling, 844 adolescents and young people between the ages of 14 and 25 years (M = 17.82; SD = 1.94) linked to the juvenile justice system in specialized care centers in Manizales, Medellin, Bogota and Monteria participated. The study had the technical and ethical support of the Instituto Colombiano de Bienestar Familiar and the Ethics Committee of the Universidad de San Buenaventura for the execution of the project. It had the informed consent of the legal representatives and the informed consent of the adolescents. Data were collected through a sociodemographic card, questionnaires on antisocial and delinquent behavior, prosocial tendencies, moral disengagement mechanisms, regulatory emotional self-efficacy, the inventory of callous-unemotional traits, and the interpersonal reactivity index. Results indicated that empathy, callous-unemotional traits, regulatory emotional self-efficacy, and moral disengagement had small and intermediate associations and differential effects on antisocial-delinquent behaviors and prosocial tendencies. Structural equation analyses showed that moral disengagement is a sociocognitive process that mediates the association between empathy, callous-unemotional traits, and antisocial-delinquent behavior, and prosocial tendencies. The results of this research are useful for the development of intervention strategies and clinical, psychoeducational and psychosocial accompaniment focused on emotional factors and moral agency in the processes of re-education and social reintegration of this population. In addition, the results provide evidence for the cognitive-social theory by showing that moral disengagement is a mediating psychological mechanism that interacts with emotional factors to explain the social behavior of young offenders.DoctoradoDoctor en Psicología276 páginasapplication/pdfhttps://hdl.handle.net/10819/25373spaMedellínFacultad de PsicologíaMedellínDoctorado en Psicologíainfo:eu-repo/semantics/closedAccesshttp://purl.org/coar/access_right/c_14cbAttribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivatives 4.0 Internationalhttp://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/4.0/Agudelo Rico, D., Panesso Giraldo, C., Arbeláez Caro, J.
