description Esta investigación fue un tipo de estudio correlacional porque se determinó el grado de relación o asociación “no causal” entre las variables de aptitud física y dependencia funcional y los síntomas depresivos en el adulto mayor. La investigación se llevó a cabo en dos hogares geriátricos, refugio la milagrosa en la ciudad de Cartagena de indias – Bolívar y hogar San Pedro Claver en el municipio de Bayunca – Bolívar, en el cual participaron adultos mayores entre los 60 y 90 años. Para la recolección de datos se emplearon escalas de evaluación tales como: sennior fitness test para evaluar la aptitud física, escala geriátrica de Yesavage para determinar los síntomas depresivos, escala de Pfeiffer para evaluar el deterioro cognitivo y la escala de Barthel para evaluar la dependencia funcional que tuvo como objetivo general determinar la aptitud física y dependencia funcional asociada a síntomas de depresión en el adulto mayor.

La investigación se llevó a cabo en dos hogares geriátricos, refugio la milagrosa en la ciudad de Cartagena de indias – Bolívar y hogar San Pedro Claver en el municipio de Bayunca – Bolívar, en el cual participaron adultos mayores entre los 60 y 90 años. Para la recolección de datos se emplearon escalas de evaluación tales como: sennior fitness test para evaluar la aptitud física, escala geriátrica de Yesavage para determinar los síntomas depresivos, escala de Pfeiffer para evaluar el deterioro cognitivo y la escala de Barthel para evaluar la dependencia funcional que tuvo como objetivo general determinar la aptitud física y dependencia funcional asociada a síntomas de depresión en el adulto mayor.Objective: To determine the physical fitness and functional dependence associatedwithsymptoms of depression in the elderly. Methodology: This research was a type of correlational study because it determined the degreeof relationship or “non-causal” association between the variables of physical fitness andfunctional dependence and depressive symptoms in the elderly. The research was carriedout intwo nursing homes, Refugio la Milagrosa in the city of Cartagena de Indias – Bolivar andHogarSan Pedro Claver in the municipality of Bayunca – Bolivar, in which elderly people between60and 90 years old participated. For data collection, evaluation scales such as: senior fitness test toevaluate physical fitness, geriatric scale of Yesavaje to determine depressive symptoms, Pfeifferscale to evaluate cognitive deterioration and the Barthel scale to evaluate functional dependencewere used. Results: In this research, the relationship between low flexibility of lower limbs and depressionin the elderly was obtained as results. The results indicated a significant association, withap-value of 0.047. This p-value suggests that the observed differences in flexibility betweenthosewith and without depression are statistically significant, reinforcing the idea that improvingflexibility may contribute to better mental health outcomes in older adults.
