Its main objective is comprehend the impact of socialbarriers in the human development through the analysis ofsocial expectations inside the group where an intellectuallydisable person is, and the way these expectations influencehis/her adaptive behavior. Based on some interviews, this article also takes special meanings that mothers have built upalong their experiences with an intellectual disabled person.Este artículo se desarrolla a partir de los resultados parciales de la investigación “Representaciones sociales de la discapacidad intelectual y su relación con el desarrollo de destrezas adaptativas de vida en la comunidad”, que tiene como objetivo comprender el impacto de las barreras de carácter social en el desarrollo del sujeto, analizando cómo las expectativas de los grupos sociales en los cuales se desenvuelve la persona en situación de discapacidad intelectual influyen en el tipo de conducta adaptativa que desarrolle. La investigación de referencia es un estudio comprensivo de corte hermenéutico que retoma los discursos de los actores para comprender sus significaciones frente a esta experiencia particular.
