The paper makes use of ergonomics to display how it can be a valuable tool in the analysis and design of geriatric spaces. The main purpose of the paper is to propose design and architectural criteria, which, guided by ergonomics and users' needs, promotes patients' integration and participation and minimizes the barriers that limit their autonomy. Lastly, the paper suggests that architects and designers should go beyond traditional approaches when dealing with geriatric spaces.Esta investigación se fundamenta en el estudio de usuarios psiquiátricos-geriátricos y de su interacción con los espacios hospitalarios, haciendo uso de una metodología de análisis de usabilidad y habitabilidad. Desde esta perspectiva, la presente propuesta expone la ergonomía, en el marco del Diseño Social como herramienta útil para el análisis y diseño de espacios geriátricos. El objetivo general consistió en proponer determinantes arquitectónicos de diseño con énfasis ergonómico, visto desde el usuario, para la proyección de espacios hospitalarios contribuyendo de esta forma a la integración, participación social y minimización de las barreras que limitan la autonomía del paciente geriátrico. Por último, la intención de esta investigación fue esclarecer el aporte de la ergonomía a la arquitectura, apelando a una toma de conciencia del rol profesional del arquitecto y diseñador ante problemas que trascienden el ámbito clínico geriátrico tradicional.
