El turismo masivo, popular entre 1950 y 1970, afecta negativamente el medio ambiente y la vida local, incrementando la delincuencia y elevando costos. Surgido en Italia en los 80, el turismo lento promueve viajes sin prisa, respeto ambiental y disfrute cultural profundo, oponiéndose al "fast food". Salento, en Quindío, es conocido por su arquitectura colonial y el Valle del Cocora, pero sufre problemas por turismo masivo y gestión improvisada. Pijao, la 'Ciudad Lenta', fomenta un turismo responsable que equilibra el ingreso económico sin afectar a la comunidad, evitando los efectos negativos del turismo masivo.Tourism, defined by the UNWTO as activities undertaken during trips and stays outside one's usual environment for less than a year for leisure, business, or other purposes, is divided into mass and slow tourism.
