The paper uses the results ofthe research project “Evolution of the investment alternativesin financial assets by small investors in the Coffee Regionduring the period 2002-2007,” elaborated in 2008.El presente documento desarrolla los elementos teóricos sobre el mercado de valores, explicando la tipología de agentes y productos que en él existen; posteriormente se describe el proceso de transformación del mercado bursátil enColombia y culmina con una primera caracterización del mercado de valores en el Eje Cafetero, haciendo hincapié en el papel desarrollado por el pequeño inversionista.
