Facultad de Ciencias Humanas, Sociales y de la Educación, Pereira, 2011La esclerosis múltiple (EM) es una enfermedad que afecta principalmente al género femenino y a los adultos jóvenes dado que su inicio puede ir desde los 20 a 40 años de edad. Es neurodegenerativa y desmielinizante del Sistema Nervioso Central (SNC); su principal característica es la pérdida de mielina la cual ocasiona la formación de placas focales a lo largo de la sustancia blanca. Por otro lado, aunque los planteamientos sobre la causa inicial de dicha enfermedad sigue siendo desconocida, una predisposición genética y factores ambientales de carácter infeccioso: viral o bacteriano, han sido las hipótesis que la explican. Las manifestaciones clínicas de la enfermedad dependen de las áreas del SNC que estén afectadas, entre los signos y síntomas más frecuentes se encuentran las alteraciones motoras, sensitivas y cognitivas. Este artículo pretende estudiar los síntomas cognitivos de acuerdo con los tres tipos de EM más comunes (Remitente-Recurrente, Secundaria Progresiva y, Primaria Progresiva), para así llegar a consolidar perfiles cognitivos que puedan llegar a aportar clínicamente al establecimiento del diagnóstico diferencial y posibles planes de intervención a los síntomas en sus inicios tempranos como en los casos de DCL. Luego, se presentarán algunas generalidades sobre la EM, logrando con esto realizar una exposición de los artículos empíricos publicados por diversos autores respecto al tema. /Abstract: Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a disease that mainly affects women and young adults since its onset can range from 20 to 40 years of age. It is neurodegenerative and demyelinating of the Central Nervous System (CNS); Its main characteristic is the loss of myelin which causes the formation of focal plaques along the white matter. On the other hand, although the initial cause of this disease remains unknown, a genetic predisposition and environmental factors of an infectious nature: viral or bacterial, have been the hypotheses that explain it. The clinical manifestations of the disease depend on the areas of the CNS that are affected; among the most frequent signs and symptoms are motor, sensory and cognitive alterations. This article aims to study the cognitive symptoms according to the three most common types of MS (Relapsing-Remitting, Secondary Progressive and Primary Progressive), in order to consolidate cognitive profiles that can contribute clinically to the establishment of the differential diagnosis and possible intervention plans for symptoms in their early onset as in cases of MCI.
