Using the technique of focus groups, fifty-nine labor activities developed in the exercise in the area were identified. Additionally, in a sample of 35 psychologists, by applying the questionnaire MRCESP, some labor issues and the self-evaluation of fifty-six Core Competencies in Public Health (CESP) grouped into six domains were identified. Their self-evaluation identifies CESP as increased exercise the most related with their training: Health promotion and social participation, public health surveillance and analysis of the health situation. In a minor measure exercise the CESP related to the incidence of taking decisions, design and implementation of public policies. Some failures are evident in planning of management processes of Human Talent in Health.El estudio tuvo como objetivo caracterizar la actividad ocupacional del psicólogo en el área de salud pública en el departamento del Huila. Mediante la técnica de grupos focales se identificaron 59 actividades laborales que desarrolla en su ejercicio en el área. adicionalmente, en una muestra no probabilística de 35 psicólogos, mediante la aplicación del cuestionario Marco Regional de Competencias Esenciales e Salud Pública (MRCESP), se registraron algunos aspectos laborales y la autoevaluación de 56 Competencias Esenciales en Salud Pública (CESP) agrupadas en seis dominios. Su autoevaluación señala como CESP de mayor ejercicio las más relacionadas con su formación: Promoción de la salud y participación social, Vigilancia en salud pública, y Análisis de la situación de salud. En menor medida ejercen las CESP relacionadas con la incidencia en toma decisiones y diseño e implementación de políticas públicas.
