Background: Physical activity (PA) and mental health have increasingly gained interest. After the Covid-19 lockdown, people experienced mental health problems, mainly with depressive symptoms (DS). Therefore, this study aims: first, to examine the differences between DS and levels of PA; second, to compare PA levels and DS according to sex. Method: A quantitative non-experimental design was used. A total of 156 young people aged 18 to 43 participated (Mean age = 22.3; SD = 5.1), including 90 men (Mean age = 22.7; SD = 5.0) and 66 women (Mean age = 21.6; SD = 5.2). PA was assessed through the IAPQ and DS with the BDI. Results: The findings showed that: (i) there are differences between PA levels and DS; (ii) differences in PA and DS according to sex; and (iii) when the interaction between PA and sex for DS is analyzed, the effects disappear; however, men with vigorous PA have significantly fewer DS than women at mild and moderate levels. Conclusions: Individuals with light PA, regardless of sex, had higher DS. Women were more prone to DS and less active. These data suggest that PA may be a potential co-therapeutic and preventive strategy for mental health.
