Esta tendencia ascendente no solo representa un desafío para la salud pública, sino que también plantea serias preguntas sobre las causas subyacentes y los factores de riesgo asociados con estas condiciones. La presente investigación realizo una revisión sistemática de la literatura científica disponible logrando identificar, compilar y analizar las diversas causas y factores de riesgo que contribuyen a la prevalencia de la obesidad y el sobrepeso en este grupo etario. Objetivo: Determinar a través de una revisión de la literatura científica la prevalencia, las causas y factores de riesgo de la obesidad y sobrepeso en adolescentes y jóvenes de 11 a 24 años. Metodología: Se realizo una revisión de la literatura, a partir de la búsqueda de artículos publicados relacionados con los términos de búsqueda establecidos, que permitieron encontrar los factores de riesgos sociales involucrados en la génesis del sobrepeso y obesidad. Se utilizaron bases de datos como Pubmed, Biblioteca Virtual en Salud (bvs), Cochrane Library. Se aplico el método de revisión descriptiva porque brindan a los lectores información sobre la obesidad y el sobrepeso en los jóvenes y cómo corren el riesgo de sufrir enfermedades crónicas no transmisibles. Para orientar la revisión se planteó una pregunta guía ¿Cuál es la prevalencia, las causas y factores de riesgo de la obesidad y sobrepeso en adolescentes y jóvenes entre los 11 a 24 años? Resultados: Según los estudios analizados, la obesidad y el sobrepeso en jóvenes de 11 a 24 años son el resultado de múltiples factores interrelacionados, como la alimentación inadecuada, el sedentarismo, el entorno social y la salud mental. Las intervenciones más efectivas fueron aquellas de enfoque integral, que combinaron educación en salud, actividad física, monitoreo del IMC y apoyo familiar o psicológico. Estas estrategias promovieron cambios positivos en los hábitos de vida, aunque no siempre se tradujeron en reducciones significativas del IMC, lo que refleja la complejidad de abordar esta problemática de forma aislada o a corto plazo. Sin embargo, muchos estudios carecen de un seguimiento longitudinal que permita evaluar la sostenibilidad de los cambios logrados, lo cual limita el conocimiento sobre la adherencia a largo plazo. Discusión y Conclusión: La obesidad y el sobrepeso en jóvenes de 11 a 24 años responden a múltiples factores interrelacionados. Las intervenciones integrales que combinan alimentación saludable, actividad física, salud mental y apoyo familiar han demostrado ser más efectivas que las acciones informativas aisladas. Factores como el entorno socioeconómico, el sedentarismo y el consumo de bebidas azucaradas aumentan el riesgo cardiometabólico. No obstante, la falta de seguimiento a largo plazo limita la evaluación de la sostenibilidad de estos programas, lo que resalta la necesidad de estrategias interdisciplinarias y personalizadas desde etapas tempranas.

Esta tendencia ascendente no solo representa un desafío para la salud pública, sino que también plantea serias preguntas sobre las causas subyacentes y los factores de riesgo asociados con estas condiciones. La presente investigación realizo una revisión sistemática de la literatura científica disponible logrando identificar, compilar y analizar las diversas causas y factores de riesgo que contribuyen a la prevalencia de la obesidad y el sobrepeso en este grupo etario. Objetivo: Determinar a través de una revisión de la literatura científica la prevalencia, las causas y factores de riesgo de la obesidad y sobrepeso en adolescentes y jóvenes de 11 a 24 años. Metodología: Se realizo una revisión de la literatura, a partir de la búsqueda de artículos publicados relacionados con los términos de búsqueda establecidos, que permitieron encontrar los factores de riesgos sociales involucrados en la génesis del sobrepeso y obesidad. Se utilizaron bases de datos como Pubmed, Biblioteca Virtual en Salud (bvs), Cochrane Library. Se aplico el método de revisión descriptiva porque brindan a los lectores información sobre la obesidad y el sobrepeso en los jóvenes y cómo corren el riesgo de sufrir enfermedades crónicas no transmisibles. Para orientar la revisión se planteó una pregunta guía ¿Cuál es la prevalencia, las causas y factores de riesgo de la obesidad y sobrepeso en adolescentes y jóvenes entre los 11 a 24 años? Resultados: Según los estudios analizados, la obesidad y el sobrepeso en jóvenes de 11 a 24 años son el resultado de múltiples factores interrelacionados, como la alimentación inadecuada, el sedentarismo, el entorno social y la salud mental. Las intervenciones más efectivas fueron aquellas de enfoque integral, que combinaron educación en salud, actividad física, monitoreo del IMC y apoyo familiar o psicológico. Estas estrategias promovieron cambios positivos en los hábitos de vida, aunque no siempre se tradujeron en reducciones significativas del IMC, lo que refleja la complejidad de abordar esta problemática de forma aislada o a corto plazo. Sin embargo, muchos estudios carecen de un seguimiento longitudinal que permita evaluar la sostenibilidad de los cambios logrados, lo cual limita el conocimiento sobre la adherencia a largo plazo. Discusión y Conclusión: La obesidad y el sobrepeso en jóvenes de 11 a 24 años responden a múltiples factores interrelacionados. Las intervenciones integrales que combinan alimentación saludable, actividad física, salud mental y apoyo familiar han demostrado ser más efectivas que las acciones informativas aisladas. Factores como el entorno socioeconómico, el sedentarismo y el consumo de bebidas azucaradas aumentan el riesgo cardiometabólico. This research conducted a systematic review of the available scientific literature to identify, compile, and analyze the various causes and risk factors contributing to the prevalence of obesity and overweight in this age group. Objective: To determine, through a review of the scientific literature, the prevalence, causes, and risk factors of obesity and overweight among adolescents and young people aged 11 to 24. Methodology: A literature review was carried out by searching published articles related to the established search terms, allowing for the identification of social risk factors involved in the development of overweight and obesity. Databases such as PubMed, Virtual Health Library (VHL), and Cochrane Library were used. A descriptive review method was applied, as it provides readers with information about obesity and overweight in young people and their risk of developing noncommunicable chronic diseases. The review was guided by the research question: What is the prevalence, the causes, and the risk factors of obesity and overweight in adolescents and young people aged 11 to 24? Results: According to the studies analyzed, obesity and overweight in youth aged 11 to 24 result from multiple interrelated factors, including poor diet, physical inactivity, social environment, and mental health. The most effective interventions were those with a comprehensive approach, combining health education, physical activity, BMI monitoring, and family or psychological support. These strategies promoted positive lifestyle changes, although they did not always lead to significant reductions in BMI, reflecting the complexity of addressing this issue in isolation or over the short term. However, many studies lacked longitudinal follow-up to assess the sustainability of the changes achieved, limiting knowledge about long-term adherence. Discussion and Conclusion: Obesity and overweight among youth aged 11 to 24 are driven by multiple interrelated factors. Comprehensive interventions that combine healthy eating, physical activity, mental health support, and family involvement have proven more effective than isolated informational efforts. Socioeconomic environment, sedentary behavior, and consumption of sugary drinks increase cardiometabolic risk.
