Diabetes mellitus consists of two main clinical pictures: type 1 diabetes mellitus, characterized by the destruction of insulin-producing cells due to an autoimmune attack, and type 2 diabetes mellitus, in which the deterioration of insulin-producing pancreatic beta cells is partial, and insulin activity is impaired by resistance to its action in the tissues. Multiple therapeutic plans exist for chronic diabetes therapy, including subcutaneous insulin administration. However, the presence of cardiovascular complications means that the life expectancy and quality of life of diabetics are significantly impaired. La diabetes mellitus es una de las causas más frecuentes de mortalidad en el mundo y su estrecha relación etiológica con la obesidad, hace que el aumento en la prevalencia sea continuamente mayor, especialmente en los países en vías de desarrollo. La diabetes mellitus está constituida por dos principales cuadros clínicos: la diabetes mellitus tipo 1 caracterizada por una destrucción completa de las células productoras de insulina debido a un ataque autoinmune y la diabetes mellitus tipo 2, en la que el deterioro de las células beta pancreáticas productoras de insulina es parcial y la actividad de la insulina está deteriorada por resistencia a su acción en los tejidos. Múltiples planes terapéuticos existen para la terapia crónica de la diabetes, dentro de los que se incluye la administración subcutánea de insulina.
