Se trata de un procedimiento médico que se realiza con un promedio calculado de 1.000.000 de pacientes/año alrededor del mundo, de 100.000 pacientes/año solo en los Estados Unidos y, de 100.000 pacientes/año solo en una ciudad española (Bernardo & Urretavizcaya, 2015; Prudic & Duan, 2017; Ruiz Piñera, 2007). Desde un punto de vista histórico se constituye en el tratamiento somático más antiguo ¿ que persiste en su aplicación hasta la fecha ¿ para múltiples condiciones psiquiátricas y que se realiza con indicaciones clínicas precisas a la luz de la ¿medicina basada en la evidencia¿ (J.- O. Ottosson, 2004; Weiner & Reti, 2017), tendencia esta, bien intencionada, de naturaleza y tono metodológico riguroso, pero falible y contingente.
