The work contextualizes and examines the educational discourse of colonial regime, and compares it to similar efforts that took place in Spain and other countries in Latin America. Of the sources consulted, it concludes that they failed the efforts made by the Spanish Crown in teaching first letters addressed to the population in general. El  artículo  es  resultado  de  una  investigación  sobre  la  enseñanza  de  las primeras  letras  en Chiapas,  en  las  postrimerías de la colonia y durante la revolución de  independencia. El  trabajo  contextualiza y  examina  el discurso educativo del régimen colonial, y  lo compara con esfuerzos similares que tuvieron lugar  tanto en España como en otros países de  Iberoamérica.
