Nowadays, society demands natural science teachers to train students in scientific skills that allow them to face and solve the changes the world is experiencing. Therefore, knowing the mental structure that operates in educators when promoting competences is a first step to determine the transformations that require educational processes. Consequently, this research characterizes the conceptions that natural science teachers have regarding inquiry competence (IC). The nature of the study is descriptive, having as a method of analysis the phenomenological, using the in-depth interview and analyzing the data with Atlas Ti v. 9. The results show that teaching conceptions have partial approaches on conceptual and procedural aspects of IC, for they confuse it with the scientific method and a teaching methodology. These findings can serve as input for future analysis in this field of study.El estudio de las concepciones docentes es un elemento clave para comprender la manera en que se configuran las prácticas de aula. En la actualidad, la sociedad exige de los docentes de ciencias naturales formar a los estudiantes en competencias científicas que les permitan afrontar y solucionar los cambios que experimenta el mundo. Por esto, conocer la estructura mental que opera en los educadores al momento de fomentar las competencias es un primer paso para determinar las transformaciones que requieren los procesos educativos. En consecuencia, esta investigación caracteriza las concepciones que tienen los docentes de ciencias naturales en lo concerniente a la competencia indagación (CI). La naturaleza del estudio es de tipo descriptivo, teniendo como método de análisis lo fenomenológico, usando la entrevista en profundidad y analizando los datos con Atlas Ti v. 9. Los resultados muestran que las concepciones docentes tienen acercamientos parciales sobre aspectos conceptuales y procedimentales de la CI, dado que la confunden con el método científico y una metodología de enseñanza.
