At the age of thirteen he demonstrated his ability to make portraits and devoted himself to making religious icons and restorations for the Orthodox churches of his people, under the teaching of iconographer Bunakov.Nació el 5 de agosto de 1844 en la pequeña ciudad ucraniana de Chuguev. Hijo de un colono agricultor y exmilitar, y al igual que muchos hijos de colonos militares, fue a la academia de topografía de la escuela militar, donde surgió su pasión por el dibujo, la pintura y la escultura.
