description She is an African descent teacher belonging to the Garifuna ethnic group. She worked pro bono in a poor neighborhood in her hometown, where she founded the kindergarten and gave literacy classes to soldiers. With her salary, she used to buy school supplies for children. Currently, she teaches in the school where she completed her primary education and where, as a child, she was not allowed to speak her mother tongue. She promotes education according to the linguistic and cultural reality of her people. Her classroom is a sample of Garifuna cultural elements such as fishing, food, and other values. This work emerged in the frame of the research project entitled African and African Descendant Teachers in Colombia, Brazil, Guatemala, Venezuela, Equatorial Guinea in the century XX-XXI, within a research line on Latin American Educators. Life history method and qualitative approach were applied. Field visits were carried out, interviews were conducted with Nicolasa, with people who know her and some relatives. It is evident that her educational practice has been influenced by the resilience, pride and persistence of Garifuna women. Her determination to start a Kindergarten school, to recover and to inform students and community about the worldview and values of the Garifuna culture; including language, dance, and music demonstrate her high sense of responsability and commitment to teaching. Nicolasa impacts on the social, cultural and political processes in favor of a change of mind in a society that has suffered discrimination and racism for many years, in order to project a cultural identity and educational development for the benefit and continuous improvement of Garifuna people.

Trabajó ad honorem en un barrio pobre en su ciudad natal, donde fundó la escuela de preprimaria. Alfabetizó soldados. Con su sueldo por alfabetizar, compraba útiles escolares para los niños. Enseña en la escuela, donde cursó la educación primaria y donde, de niña, le prohibieron hablar su idioma materno. Promueve educación acorde a la realidad idiomática y cultural de su Pueblo. Su aula es una muestra elementos culturales garífuna como la pesca, alimentación, valores y otros.  El trabajo surgió en el marco del proyecto de investigación titulado Maestras Africanas y Afrodescendientes en Colombia, Brasil, Guatemala, Venezuela, Guinea Ecuatorial, siglo XX a XXI, en una línea de investigación sobre Educadores Latinoamericanos. Método: Historia de vida, con enfoque cualitativo. Se hicieron visitas de campo. Se entrevistó a Nicolasa, personas que la conocen y a familiares. Esta investigación se realizó en el municipio de Puerto Barrios, cabecera del departamento de Izabal, Guatemala, bajo la coordinación técnica y financiamiento de la Escuela de Formación de Profesores de Enseñanza Media, de la Universidad de San Carlos de Guatemala. Ha incidido en el desarrollo de su práctica educativa al evidenciar la resiliencia, el orgullo y persistencia de las mujeres garífunas, al iniciar una escuela de educación preprimaria, al recuperar y dar a conocer a estudiantes y comunidad, la cosmovisión y valores de la cultura garífuna; entre ellos, el idioma, danza y música. Altamente responsable, comprometida con su labor docente; impacta dentro de los procesos sociales, culturales y políticos, para el cambio de mentalidad de una sociedad que por muchos años ha estado dentro de un ambiente de discriminación y racismo, para proyectar una identidad cultural y desarrollo educativo para el propio beneficio y superación permanente del pueblo Garífuna. Professora afrodescendente da etnia Garífuna. Trabalhou ad honorem em um bairro pobre de sua cidade natal, onde fundou a escola infantil. Alfabetizou soldados. Com seu soldo de alfabetizadora, comprava materiais escolares para as crianças. Ensina na escola onde cursou a educação primaria, na qual lhe proibiram de falar seu idioma materno. Promove educação conforme o contexto linguístico e cultural de seu Povo. Sua aula é uma mostra de elementos da cultura garífuna, como a pesca, alimentação, valores e outros. O trabalho se insere no contexto do projeto de pesquisa intitulado Professoras Africanas e Afrodescendentes na Colômbia, Brasil, Guatemala, Venezuela, Guiné Equatorial, séculos XX e XXI, em uma linha de pesquisa sobre Educadores Latinoamericanos. Método: História de vida, com enfoque qualitativo. Foram realizadas visitas de campo. Foram feitas entrevistas com Nicolasa, pessoas que a conhecem e familiares. Essa pesquisa foi realizada no município de Porto Barrios, capital do estado de Izabal, Guatemala, sob a coordenação técnica e financiamento da Escola de Formação de Professores de Ensino Médio, da Universidade de São Carlos de Guatemala. Contribuiu para o desenvolvimento de sua prática educativa sua evidente resiliência, o orgulho e persistência das mulheres garífunas, a iniciativa de iniciar uma escola de educação infantil, levar ao conhecimento de estudantes e da comunidade a cosmovisão e os valores da cultura garífuna, entre eles o idioma, a dança e a música.
