description In this article, Derive is assessed according to its technical and pedagogical possibilities to facilitate students’ learning of differential calculus. The objective was to implement a methodological proposal in the teaching-learning process of the derivative of a functionin the initial training of mathematics teachers. The approach was quantitative, with a descriptive basis. The information collection instrument was the survey. We worked with a deliberate sample of 48 students from an initial teacher training program. The informationwas collected through a five options Likert-type questionnaire. The findings show the ease of access, the simplicity of the software and its pedagogical possibilities for proper usage of concepts associated with derivative applications. It is concluded that the adoption of Derivefacilitates the learning of derivatives, since it allows an appropriate usage of concepts and theories addressed in the methodological proposal.

El objetivo fue implementar una propuesta metodológica en el proceso de enseñanza-aprendizaje de la derivada de una función en la formación inicial de docentes de matemáticas. El enfoque fue cuantitativo, con carácter descriptivo. El instrumento de recolección de información fue la encuesta. Se trabajó con una muestra intencional de 48 estudiantes de un programa de formación inicial de docentes. La información se recolectó a través de un cuestionario tipo Likert de cinco alternativas. Los hallazgos muestran la facilidad de acceso, la sencillez del software y sus posibilidades pedagógicas para un uso adecuado de conceptos asociados con las aplicaciones de las derivadas. Se concluye que la incorporación de Derive facilita el aprendizaje de derivadas, pues permite un manejo apropiado de los conceptos y teorías trabajados en la propuesta metodológica.Neste artigo se faz uma valoração de Derive, segundo suas possibilidades técnicas e pedagógicas para facilitar aos estudantes a aprendizagem de cálculo diferencial. O objetivo foi implementar uma proposta metodológica no processo de ensino-aprendizagem da derivada de uma função na formação inicial de docentes de matemáticas. O enfoque foi qualitativo com caráter descritivo. O instrumento da colheita da informação foi a pesquisa de opinião. Trabalhou-se com uma amostra intencional de 48 estudantes de um programa de formação inicial de docentes. A informação coletou-se através de um questionário tipoLikert de cinco alternativas. Os achados mostram a facilidade de acesso, a simplicidade do software e suas possibilidades pedagógicas para um uso adequado de conceitos associados com as aplicações das derivadas.
