Current historiographical debates on the consequences that Independence movements had on the Hispanic American economies and societies serve as backdrop for this study, which poses that the combination of loss of privileges, changes in political situation and international war strategies, together with the budget crisis of the growing Republic, affected labor demand in this city and its defense systems.

Teniendo como telón de fondo los actuales debates historiográficos sobre las consecuencias de las independencias sobre las economías y las sociedades hispanoamericanas, argumentamos que la combinación de la pérdida de privilegios, el cambio de la situación política y de las estrategias de la guerra a nivel internacional, aunado a la crisis presupuestal de la naciente república, afectaron la demanda laboral en esa ciudad, la que había estado vinculada a los trabajos en los sistemas defensivos.Dans le but de déterminer les conséquences sociales de l’Indépendance sur la population libre travaillant à Carthagène des Indes, cet article compare les investissements réalisés et les quantités des travailleurs engagés dans les systèmes de fortification entre 1750 et 1850, en prenant comme point d’inflexion les années de l’indépendance.
