Summary: | The establishment of Gaditan ayuntamientos (municipal councils) during their second phase (1820-1821) ushered in a new era of local governance. In towns that had previously held the status of «repúblicas de indios» (indigenous republics), this process led to the inclusion of non-indigenous individuals in the council. The formation and suppression of the municipal institution affected one such town, Tarímbaro. This study delves into the dynamics between the various racial sectors based on the methods used to elect their members. Consultation of documentation located in repositories and archives revealed connections between indigenous and non-indigenous sectors that shared local government, demonstrating that the indigenous population was not displaced by the creation of these institutions. Additionally, common groups were formed and faced off against others of the same composition, highlighting heterogeneous dynamics and relationships between the racial sectors. |
